Sandro Canavezzi de Abreu (sandroid)


He currently works on artistic, teaching, and research projects related to spatial issues and digital interfaces, human–machine interaction, virtual reality, augmented reality, physical computing, pervasive computing, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. Since 2016, he has been an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at UFMG. He is a researcher with the LAGEAR Research Group (EA–UFMG) and the director and founding researcher of NEXT – UFMG’s Immersive Technologies Laboratory. From 2009 to 2016, he was a professor at the Federal University of Uberlândia, teaching digital interfaces in the Architecture and Urbanism and Design programs. He is the founder and director of MetaLab-BH. 

He was an artist-in-residence at Podewil/Transmediale in Berlin (2001–2003) and at V2_Org/Langlois Foundation in Rotterdam (2005). He has developed interactive interfaces that address tensions and transductions between the analog and digital realms. His works have received international recognition, including “VOID” – First Prize for Electronic Arts (interactive interface design, Langlois Foundation, Canada, 2004), as well as four national awards: an Honorable Mention for “Ressonâncias Temporais” – ComCiência Award 2022; “PELAS FENDAS” – Rumos Cinema e Vídeo Award (Multimedia Events category, Itaú Cultural, 2010); “I/VOID/O” – Rumos Cybernetic Art Award – Interface Design (category: project to be developed, Itaú Cultural, 2007); and “VOID” – Honorable Mention at the 6th Sergio Motta Award for Electronic Art (interactive interface design, Instituto Sergio Motta, 2005).

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (USP, 1996), a Master’s degree in Digital Poetics (ECA-USP, 2000), a Master’s degree in Generative Systems from Codelab_berlin/Humbolt University - Berlin. (Codelab/Podewil – Berlin, 2003), and a PhD in Architecture (USP, 2010).
